When I learned I was moving to Africa in early 1981 I realized I was not sure if God was big enough for that. . . will I be stranded? Keep in mind, that 1981 was before personal computers and decades before cell phones hit Africa. There was only one land phone line in the town I lived in Nigeria. And that belonged to the Governor of the state who was rarely home in our small town. Besides, I did not now him so I couldn’t use it. My only reliable communication beyond Nigeria was snail-mail letters sent and received once a month when I traveled three hours to the state capital for ministry meetings.
I honestly questioned: Am I nuts to go to the other side of the planet where I do not know anyone?
Then I read Psalm 139: emphasis & additions mine…

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning [air plane?]
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, [Africa?]
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
I knew too that Jesus promises to be with us. “I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:20) The thing is. . .I had not experienced God in far and foreign places. . .yet.
I decided to put those and other promises to the test.
Fast forward 36 years, is God big enough? Well, I’m still here. My first two and a half years in Africa I survived and was healed, with medicine, of many parasites, including Typhoid fever. Over the years, with God’s help, I have learned several languages to varying degrees, eaten things Americans usually don’t, had malaria more than I can count. I also lived through a Coup d’Etat more up close and personally than I ever imagined. Our son nearly died in Senegal, I learned that spiritual warfare is real, and so much more.
Through all of it I experienced the presence, power and the love of our Creator God on five continents. (Australia is on my bucket list.) This is not about me, but it is about our Creator God who is big enough for anything, anywhere!
What challenges are you facing now? Look in the Bible and find promises, or take the two I have here. There are many books on Bible Promises to choose from if you want some help. As always, I would love to hear how Abba reveals himself as “big enough” to you.
Amazing experience. So much here about God’s promises. Keep these coming!
