Feathers

I like feathers.

I like watching birds.

I’m a little allergic to down pillows and comforters,

but I still like feathers.

“He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings.” Psalm 91: 4a

I think of times when God hides me in the shadow of his wings.

In those moments I imagine nestling into His soft feathers.

“His faithful promises are your armor and protection.” V4b

These soft feathers of His promises, like the unchangeable character of the Living God,

are also impenetrable.

Knowing I am safe in His promises,

gives me courage to fly.

With my imagination soaring on the currents of the Holy Spirit,

there is freedom to move, see and . . . create.

The landing is gentle,

like the feather on the flower.

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.

  1. I have seen the imagination soaring on the currents of the Holy Spirit come to fruition…so beautiful…so God…
    Blessings…

  2. Thanks for your writing on feathers.
Like you I am allergic to them, but agree that they are lovely.
    Another one of God’s creation.
    Blessings, Bette

  3. Thank you, Andrea. My husband was ill for 16 years. At times when I was at my lowest I would find a perfect, clean feather unexpectedly at my feet. I have a large container of feathers I have saved. Your words were a good reminder of God’s faithfulness.
