Advent Declarations

A hand carved cresh from Mali, West Africa. The shepherds are Fulani herdsman.

“Advent declarations,” was the response in my head and heart when I asked God what he wanted me to write about this week. I thought that was interesting since I had never heard of Advent declarations before. But then that happens to me all too often. My next question was, where do I start? In short order I had a strong impression to begin with Handel’s Messiah. The entire work is scripture, so I only chose a few from the lyrics of that masterpiece. I added a few parallel passages as well.

Personally, I find it helpful to step back from time to time so I can recapture the big picture. We may think we are living through things no one has ever seen before, but Solomon reminds us there is nothing new under the sun. I hope these few scripture prayers and Advent declarations will build your courage as you speak them out loud. Let the vibrations of your voice shift the atmosphere in your head, heart, home, and wherever you go.

Advent Declarations:

Lord, shine your light and your truth and lead me on a level path. Isaiah 40, v. 1-4

Lord, reveal Your glory so all can see your true character of love, power, grace, mercy and forgiveness. Isaiah 40, v. 5

Thank you Lord for sending your son, Emmanuel, God with us, Jesus. Let all the whole earth see you to worship you in Spirit and in Truth. Isaiah 7, v.14; Matthew 1, v.23; John 4:23

I declare that I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Isaiah 40, v.9; Psalm 27:13

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will not fear evil, because you are always with me. Psalm 23:4; Isaiah 9, v.2

I join with the witness of the shepherds, angels, and wise men, singing with all my being: “Glory to God in the highest, and peace on earth, good will toward men.” Luke 2, v.2, 9-11,13-14

Your son is born and given to us: and the government is upon his shoulder; and his name is called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9, v.6

I praise you God that death is swallowed up by your victory over the grave. All who believe in you will be raised to incorruptible, immortal life, in you on the last day! I Corinthians 15, 52–54

Because you carried all our grief, sorrows, and transgressions with you to the cross, we can be healed. Isaiah 53, vv.4–6

All who lay their burdens at your feet find rest for their souls. Abba, I give you all my fears and burdens and I replace them with your supernatural rest. Matthew 11, vv.28–29

Because of your victory I declare that the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf are unstopped. Then the lame will leap like a deer, and the tongue of the dumb will sing. Isaiah 35, vv.5–6

Nations and kings plot and conspire, but the Lord enthroned on high, mocks and laughs at them, because his son is already seated as King over all and he will, “dash them all to pieces like pottery.” Psalm 2, v.1-6 & v.9

I declare: Hallelujah: for the Lord God omnipotent reigns! Revelation 19, v.6;

The kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he will reign for ever and ever. Revelation 11, v.15

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, and has redeemed us to God by his blood, to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. Blessing, and honor, glory, and power, be unto him that sits on the throne, and to the Lamb for ever and ever.” Revelation 5, vv.12–14 “Amen.”

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
