What does one look for when looking for God? The answer is possibly different for every person. I am willing to guess, however, that here are many commonalities -spoken or not- that humans use to qualify “God Sightings.” Nature is a big one. Trees, mountains, oceans, animals and the diversity of each Human are just a few examples of that make us scratch our heads in awe of our Creator.
The laws of science are another category that inspires awe. One of the worlds smartest physicists, Albert Einstein once said: “Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind.” I think he understood our need to worship and be in humble relation to the Creator. We live in a constant tension as creatures learning and discovering how best to steward what has been given us.
I believe the Bible and the person of Jesus are the greatest demonstration of God with us, but. . . if someone is not already a follower of Jesus they may not be able to see that. . . yet.
When one is a follower, because we are finite, we can’t help but tether our Creator to our tiny understanding. Those with large imaginations might push the boundaries a bit, but our finiteness will always limit us this side of Heaven.
One of my favorite aspects of God is mystery. The fact that our Creator is so vast and transcendent and at the same time, His Spirit lives inside of every one who follows Jesus is beyond my ability to grasp. I again quote Einstein “The most beautiful experience we can have is the mysterious. It is the fundamental emotion that stands at the cradle of true art and true science.” Curiosity and wonder keep us looking for more of God.
When I write here, I attempt to draw you, my readers, into our multifaceted God and as much of His mystery and wonder as I am able. All I have to offer is my limited perspective, but with the Holy Spirit inviting you to look for and find Him in your own way. God says: “Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord,…” Jeremiah 29:12-14a
I hope everyone reading here is seeking our Creator on some level. I invite you again to come along as I work to seek Him as authentically as I am able. What is helpful to take on the journey? I propose a just a few things to begin: Curiosity, imagination, wonder and an acceptance of our limits, balanced with the infinite love of God. This Creator is constantly inviting us to pray and seek Him with our whole heart.
Of one thing, I am certain: The one who made us is more interested in being found, than we are in looking for Him.
Abba, Thank You for Your many promises assuring us of Your perfect love, Your care and provision, that You know all things and always have our best in Your design for every day. I admit I do not understand it well. It does not often look the way I expect. Thank You for not giving up on any of us. You are the God who can be found! Help me to stretch my capacity to perceive you! I want Holy Spirit to develop in me a deeper awareness of your presence and an ability to see how You work in and around me and the world. Amen
