Communication

These days I find clear communication, where all participants see, hear, and understand the same things, is rare. And I have been crying out for increased discernment for a long time.

Daily, I have various types of communications. Electronic connections can be problematic. So can understanding others word choices and reasonings. Various town meetings, business, and even groups of people who love Jesus are often not straight forward.

Jesus said repeatedly, ‘If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.’ I want to be one of those people, not only for spiritual truth, but all heartfelt communications.

Having ears to hear takes surrender and training. We all have things to surrender, and we are always in life’s training to become like Jesus.

I know I am still in training.

Communication requires surrender? Surrender to what? Is that even safe??

The surrender implies laying down “my rights. “

Larry Poland taught a class during my cross cultural training in 1980 before I moved to Africa. He made de the point that nowhere in the Word does it say we have rights.

We surrender and give our lives for Christ. We are not our own. Galatians 2:20

Over the years I have re-learned that lesson. . . more than once.

Sometimes we make or put idols between us and the Lord and others. Psalm 115 reminds us that idols are poor substitutes for the Living God. They cannot see, hear, feel, smell, move, or speak. “Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.” V8

When we surrender ourselves and our idols to the Living God, the natural result is worshipping Him in Spirit and in truth. Worship realigns us with the truth of who is actually in charge of our lives.

This is also where I ask Abba to sanctify my imagination. God uses our holy imaginations to heal and repair what is broken and to conceive and create what is needed for advancing the Kingdom of our God.

By remembering we are in relationship with the Creator of all things, who loves us perfectly, we find safety in Him. Psalm 27:3-4 We are hidden in the Heart of our God.

Once sealed and seated in the heavenlies with Him, we grow in Holy perspective. From this position above the fray, we perceive more fully what is happening with each participant in our communications.

Having laid down our rights, and idols, so we experience safety in the Lord, this is where discernment and creativity flourish. Here, we gain confidence to enter communications with ears to hear beyond the various forms of interference, to the real issues.

This is a space where we can engage with Kingdom answers and timing. By the grace of God, others will join in the process.

Abba,

May we experience all these shifts, giving us ears to hear You, and those around us. We ask for supernatural communication for Your will to be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Amen

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.

  1. Thank you for this wonderful writing regarding communication.
Communications can be confusing and not clear.
I have a plaque in my kitchen which is not Jesus speaking, but
has meaning. It is as follows:
“I know you understand what you think I said but,
I am not sure you realize that what you heard
    is not what I meant.”
    Blessings, Bette Weiscopf
