Uncertainty

Uncertainty is a part of life. We can look at it as a calamity or an adventure or put it anywhere on the spectrum between the two. The cycles of life include every emotion. Uncertainty can wear us down if we let it or make us stronger.

At the same time, not all things are uncertain. The sun comes up, whether/weather or not, we see it happen.

Driving by the ocean on my way to a meeting, I had a few minutes to stop. With the sun rising ever higher in the sky, the onshore breeze was especially inviting considering the rising temperature rapidly approaching 90 F. Filling my lungs with the smell of the calm sea air made the pause in my travels well worth it.

Looking across the water, the islands, shrouded in grey when I arrived, became clearer with time. The sunlight was burning through the fog from the shore towards the islands in the bay, making my vantage point on shore increasingly hot.

It made me think of how rapidly circumstances can change.

There are powers outside our control that make uncertainty something we can count on. Even with “certain” things, we often do not know the timing. It is only our Creator who knows and controls timing.

The good news is it is possible to have a personal relationship with our Creator, who graciously provides the stability we long for. Investing in a personal relationship with anyone requires effort. I believe our moving through life, choosing to cooperate with our Creator, grows and strengthens us.

In Matthew 7:24-27 Jesus exhorts us to build our “house” on the rock and not the sand that constantly shifts. Building our personal house of relationship with the One, who is also our solid rock foundation, is our only true hope of stability.

Our Creator knows everything about us and our circumstances. Yes, all the good, and the bad. Even with that knowledge, He still wants a relationship with every one of us. Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Luke 9:1-10

Thank you Abba, for sending Jesus to save all who will accept Him.

Thank you for Your Holy Spirit who comforts and teaches us.

We choose to give You all our fears of uncertainty.

Help us all to invest our lives in our relationship with You, the rock of our salvation. Amen

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
