Artist at a Shift in Time: Book Review

Christ John Otto’s most recent book, Artists at a Shift in Time: Courage in a Time of Conflict and Change, is not only for artists. Christ, (rhymes with wrist,) helps us to find our place in this present time and to see where we fit in the eternal narrative.

He presents the place of artists and creatives in a flowing narrative. While I am eager to read the next sentence, I find it necessary to stop and more deeply consider the importance of what he is writing. After finishing the book, I am still praying and contemplating how this impacts the way I live my life. I must make personal shifts to keep pace with the broader ones.

Artists at a Shift in Time is for people who know they are artists and creatives, yet it encompasses all people. Because we are all made in the image of God, everyone is creative in different ways. We all have God given gifts. And regardless of our giftings, we are wise to steward them for the Glory of the One who gives them. We do this for the body of Christ and the world at large. A growing relationship with the Creator of all things is of course central.

I especially appreciate how, across this time of conflict and change, Christ (double entendre intended) offers some useful means to help us transform into over comers. These tools, when put into practice, have already proven for millennia to help people become mature followers of Jesus. And I suspect several will be new to many. His template for healing from Trauma is only one of the gems.

Abba, I pray You highlight this work, formed from years study and of practical ministry, to help advance Your kingdom and Your will on earth as it is in heaven. Amen

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
