Get Out of Your Head

Circumstances around us are such that, I suspect we are all trying to figure out how to navigate various options. As I pray, I hear versions of “Get out of your head, out of your thinking.”

“Why would we want to do that? And how in the world do we do that if we really want to

Proverbs three is really helping me reframe life in these often-unsettled times.

What really matters?

Relationships

Proverbs Chapter three is about how we relate to our Maker, wisdom personified, and the world we live in. It is our relationship with the Almighty that directs us, if we lean into it.

Relationships

There are life-taking relationships and life-giving relationships.

Pride…breaks relationships, because it assumes “I know best.” It produces independence from our Creator and each other. This is life-taking.

God invites us to get out of our heads where we are relying on our own understanding, and into our hearts. Hearts are that place of relationships.

We all have relational wounds. And because of this, some people will remind us that our hearts are deceitful above all things. (Jeremiah 17:9) Only our Creator, who made us with love, and for love, can heal these.

Abba offers perfect love. Proverbs 3 [My comments are in brackets, and italicsIt is worth spending time with the entire chapter.]

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; [This is God’s love for us and His faithfulness to us.]
    bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart. [Make the experience of God’s perfect love our primary aim.]
Then you will win favor and a good name
in the sight of God and man. [It is the overflow of our loving relationship with God that creates favor, not slavish obedience.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding; [Get out of your head and into His heart. From that safe place we become teachable.]
in all your ways submit to him, [Submit is not always a nasty word. It takes training and self-discipline to adjust mindsets.]
and he will make your paths straight. [Or, will offer you life-giving direction.]

Do not be wise in your own eyes; [Get out of your prideful thinking.
fear the Lord and shun evil.[ask the One who put you here to lovingly direct.]
This will bring health to your body
and nourishment to your bones. [WOW, what a promise.]

The invitation and supply

We are continually invited to live in His perfect love, saturating our hearts and minds in it until we overflow.

We are not the source.

Our Abba is the source. And yes, He is the Almighty one, offering us all the power of perfect love that brings healing.

The Son is our Good Shepherd, who leads and protects us, when we choose to depend on this relationship. He is also our Savior, our only genuine hope for perfect love.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter who meets us where we are, reminding us of our holy relationship.

When you choose to get out of your head, He says:

Pursue My face, listening to My heart, I will help you train yourself in my loving ways. As you do, you will find peace in all My intentions for you.

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
