Faith and Desperation

There are many things that can drive us to step outside what is expected of us. Faith and desperation can lead us to be courageous.

Mark 5

The woman with an issue of blood dares to enter the crowd, regardless of the fact her illness isolates her. It labels her as both worthless and dangerous. (That is a lot of power to assign to a “worthless” person.)

Faith and desperation hide her as she humbly approaches Him. She must go low, physically, emotionally and spiritually to do what she does next.

When she reaches for the hem of Jesus’ garment, it is with fear. This fear is the kind that mingles the expectation of freedom with, not wanting to be exposed.

Faith and desperation gave her courage.

(How do we honestly approach the Omnipotent Creator?)

And then it happenes. She only touches the fringe at the bottom of his cloak as he passed through the dense crowd,

yet He knows.

And so does she.

Of course, He knows.

He is the Son of Man.

For her sake, He might have kept quiet, but He has more in mind, and the power to deliver.

He interviews her openly before the throngs of people following Him as they are pressing through the narrow streets.

Mark 5:33 But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth

Her answers are honest, probably because without Him, she is a dead woman, figuratively at first, but eventually literally too.

True Freedom

Then comes the great reward He is holding for this moment.

He blesses her.

34 And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

In Christ there is no fear,

no condemnation

and no shame.

Because she dares to step out beyond her fear,

with faith and desperation,

to touch the hem of the Son of Man,

She is whole. . . in body, soul, and in spirit.

What are you afraid to bring to Jesus?

In the authority of Jesus, invite faith and desperation to breathe courage into you.

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
