Pentecost Is About New Beginnings

Pentecost is about new beginnings in several ways. Most importantly, it signals the authoritative shift from the Old Covenant God established with Abraham to the New Covenant through Jesus.

In John 14 Jesus promised the comforter will come when He leaves. Well, The Holy Spirit came in mighty demonstrations of power. (See Acts 2) There was a mighty rushing wind.

Flames of fire appeared over their heads! That would get anyone’s attention. The people from Galilee were there speaking in native their Aramaic. But the people from all over the world heard what was said in their mother tongue.

Around 3,000 became new followers of the risen Jesus that day. Miracles, signs and wonders became normative for the believers from that day.

I can hear some now, “That might have happened then, but THAT doesn’t happen now!”

To which I reply, “Are you sure?”

Pentecost is about new beginnings with the Holy Spirit. This is the person who made these things happen. This Holy Spirit is alive and well.

The Holy Spirit now lives in everyone who chooses Jesus as Lord. Under the Old Covenant, the Holy Spirit might rest on someone for a limited time. Now, believers are permanently sealed with the Holy Spirit. Eph 1:13

This Holy Spirit empowers followers in ministry, gives us love, wisdom, mercy from God and so much more. Acts 1:8

Pentecost is about new beginnings every day. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” Lamentations 2

Jesus Himself promises at the end of Matthew, “. . .I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” And He cannot lie. Numbers 29:13

So, I say Pentecost is about new beginnings for anyone, any day, who seeks the face of our Creator.

Abba,

We need you! You promise so much, and yet we wait. Or do we miss what you are doing? May we have eyes and ears and hearts to recognize what You are doing so we can join inespecially if it is not what we anticipate. Amen

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
