Defining God

Defining God is not easy. I know I do not like other people defining me. So, I began praying and asking how our Creator talks about Himself. The following are only a few verses where we find the Bible defining God in His own words.

Sit back, and choose one, or a few, to meditate on.

God said to Moses “I Am who I AM” and he said, “say this to the people of Israel: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ Exodus 3:14

I am the LORD. Exodus 6:2

I am God Almighty. . . . Genesis 17:1

Fear not. . . I am your shield. Genesis 15:1

I am the LORD your healer. Exodus 15:26

See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god beside me. . . . Deuteronomy 32:39

Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me? Jeremiah 32:27

I am the Lord your God. . . . Exodus 20:2

I am holy. Leviticus 11:4

I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. John 10:9

I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father;

and I lay down my life for the sheep. John 10:14-15

I am teaching you. Deuteronomy 4:1

I am the way, the truth, in the life. No one comes to the Father but through me. John 14:6

I came that you may have life and have it abundantly. John 10:10b

I am the vine and you are the branches. John 15

I have carved you on the palms of my hand. Isaiah 49

I am with you always even to the end of the age. Matthew 28:20

I am gentle and lowly in heart. Matthew 11:29

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. John 10

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. I and the Father are one. John 10:27-30

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
