A Drop of Love

A drop of love does not sound like much, but to people who are starving for love, a drop is very attractive. Please allow me to use water as an example.

Have you ever been in a dry place without water? I lived on the African Sahel for about a decade. The Sahel is the broad space between the rain forests in the south and the Sahara Desert to the north. It rains from Mid-March until October. Grasses grow quickly to a height of 12 feet, making it impossible to see your neighbor’s house 30 feet away. The gardens flourish. This area of West Africa is where our North American hurricanes originate.

From October, however, there is not a single drop of rain until the next March. By that end of the dry season, the ground becomes a baked, dry desert. Nearly everything that is green either dries brown and dies, or is eaten by the sheep and goats that roam freely. The daily temperatures are regularly over 100F in the shade, with no available air-conditioning, at least during my days there. That translates to over 115F in the sun. And because I shared a car, I walked a lot.

For much of my time in the small town of Langtang, Nigeria, my only running water was my students bringing water in buckets on their heads. . . literally. I really learned to appreciate water, even a drop.

What is amazing, is that after the first, single rain in March, one wakes up the next day to a thin, fresh carpet of green life all around.

A drop of water is life, so is a drop of love.

Fast forward to 2022. Wet and dry seasons continue their cycles, but want about love? As we know, the world has become dramatically polarized. I believe much of the root of our problems is because we are all dying for a drop of love. So many are looking for answers that do not include the love of God.

What happens when each of us sows a drop of love everywhere we go?

I don’t only speculate, I know from experience, that when we come humbly, dispensing a drop of love here, and another there along our paths, good things begin to grow, even on seemingly burned ground.

This is where one of Henrietta Mears’ foundational beliefs fits well. She believed that “Everyone is dying for a drop of love.” She understood well that she did not possess the kind of love needed in her own power. She prayed daily for God to give her love for others, and for that divine love to attract more and more people to Jesus Christ. “Teacher,” as she was best known, sent over 400 men and women into vocational ministry in the US and abroad through her ministry.  Offering a drop of love, and so much more, kept the Love of God fresh in her heart and in the hearts of the thousands of lives she touched for the Kingdom of God.

“But Christ proved God’s passionate love for us by dying in our place while we were still lost and ungodly!”. . . “And even more than that, we overflow with triumphant joy in our new relationship of living reconciled to God—all because of Jesus Christ!” Romans 5:8,11

Abba, I need your love for those around me. I do not have the resources, but You do. Thank you in advance for giving me eyes to see how everyone is dying for a drop of love. I ask you to fill me, allowing Your love to flow through me. Amen

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.

  1. This is so true. As I was praying with our group this morning the words “Respond with Love” came to my mind. It surprised me to read your words of love. I will hold onto the idea that our world does need love. Thank you Andrea.
