Reflections Of All Kinds

Reflections come in many ways. There are thoughtful reflections and physical reflections. We can see ourselves in a mirror or in a still body of water. We can see other things reflecting on many surfaces. The flatter and more undistorted the surface, the better the image of the reflection is.

Then there are the reflections in our minds. Contemplation a synonym for reflection. As an amateur photographer and historian I am one who loves to connect people with our living Creator, I like reflections of all kinds. Seeing God in nature is one of my favorite ways to personally connect with God and when possible to draw others in as well.

Psalm 27:4 is great inspiration for me in this connection. King David the Psalmist uses several verbs to help us. Emphases mine.

“One thing have I asked of the Lord,
    that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.”

Each of these verbs brings a different aspect of relationship building to our attention. Almost every week I have a photo that either illustrates or inspires my reflections on the multifaceted nature of our Creator. Today, I invite you to employ those verbs when you interact with my photo above. [If you do not see the image, click on the link above the title to choose “see in browser” or “Always show image”]

When you look at the photo, take some time to consider the different physical reflections in the photo There are also shadows that play with the light as well as melting ice that changes the texture of the surfaces. Consider the beauty. Maybe take some time to journal what you see. Do you connect with the photo in any way? What emotions, if any, does it elicit? Why? If you could touch the surfaces what might they feel like?

As you ask, seek, dwell, gaze and inquire, how might your reflections connect you to the character of our Creator?

I genuinely value your feedback.

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.

  1. Wonderful written direction for the reader to pause and seek the creator —yet for me I “see” so much in our beautiful earth because I am an artist, yet using the same verbs for guidance with our creation God is right there!
Have you ever done this with trees? The bark? The canopy of the branches with leaves or without?
Imagine that….without (death, bare) or with (life, leaves)

    1. Thanks Pam! Yes, I have a whole project that has been sitting, unfortunately for years, to use photos of different barks. I have also played some with canopies. I love shots of the sun shining through.
Thank for the encouragement! Thanks for reading.
      Blessings, Andrea
