“Stop for the one” is a call to see people around us and their need for God’s love.
Last fall I had the opportunity to hear Heidi Baker speak in person, not once, but twice in one week. I had heard about the founder of Iris Ministries for years. She has a PhD in Systematic Theology, but that is not what she is known for. Years ago our Creator impressed His love on her so profoundly she literally was immobilized for days. Since then she lives and ministers combining her deep knowledge of the word of God with her overwhelming experience of the Love our Creator for us. Her personal stories are dramatic from living in areas of conflict in Mozambique.
Stop for the one is not new, however, it is always revolutionary in the truest sense of the word.
These days many people are more interactive with their phones than they are with people, even when their friends and family are present. I am occasionally guilty too. YouTube is full of recordings of people walking down or across streets and getting hurt because they are not looking where they are going.
I am still in process when it comes to sharing the love of God. On days I do the following it is always easier. I pray for a fresh in filling of the Holy Spirit and I also ask to see what God sees around me. Then I look to follow the Holy Spirit’s promptings. That’s how the adventures begin. It isn’t even scary to talk with strangers if you know God is prompting you.
I gave a homeless man a ride from church one Sunday. That lead to a long conversation and prayer. God & I did not solve all his problems that day, yet there was a change. One big part was he felt heard and respected. It was the prayer that made a difference in his countenance. He literally looked calmer and healthier and affirmed he felt better. By accepting the invitation of the Holy Spirit to stop for the one, I was able to participate in moving someone closer to God.
One thing is sure, being kind to others is a good idea. Helping people we don’t know by lending a hand and listening, makes a difference. Looking for openings in conversations to introduce Jesus is fun when God is leading. I was taught to share Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit and leave the results to God. It is ultimately His responsibility to change hearts and lives. God asks us to participate in the process.
Will you stop for the one?
Abba, give us eyes to see and ears to hear what you are doing around us. May we have grace and an overflow of your love to pour into the lost around us. Help us to look for then stop for the one you have for us each day.
WOW! This is powerful. Sometimes we get so caught up in our day that an opportunity gets missed to share a smile. Thank you!
