Adapting to Obstacles

This tree has learned to adapt to a major obstacle. It did not choose where it was planted and one sees clearly its growth has faced challenges most trees do not face. Normally, a tree planted by a constant water source like the river in the background has an advantage on life.

That advantage may indeed have given it the strength to persevere when it faced a major obstacle. This tree took a unique route to survival. It went around the obstacle. . . on two sides. It did not ignore it, and it did not welcome it or become one with it.

The tree did not change the obstacle. It literally embraced it’s existence then grew around it.

One thing is clear, it did not let the fence keep it from growing into a mature tree. Does it look odd? YES! is it fruitful? YES!

So how does this apply to our lives?

There are times for everyone when we see circumstances that are not going away. We can respond in ways that that lead to becoming stuck. Or we can meet great obstacles, choose to overcome them, helping us become who God intended us to be.

Things we all have in common in life, are destiny and obstacles. The enemy of our souls does not want us to reach maturity and fruitfulness! Our Maker also puts things in our paths to test and mature us. No matter the obstacle, He is constantly aware and He works ALL things together for our good…as long as we do not give up all together.

It is up to us, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to learn to adapt. We get to fight for our survival and our destiny while maintaining our integrity. The tree is still a healthy tree, even with the outward deformity.

These obstacles make us stronger and more  The temptations in your life are no different from what others experience. And God is faithful. He will not allow the temptation to be more than you can stand. When you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you can endure.” (1 Cor. 10:13)

This tree overcame the temptation to give up. It adapted and is thriving, fulfilling its destiny of being a mature tree.

How has God been faithful to show you a way of escape in the past? What are you facing now that you need is wisdom for to find a way out?

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
