Pentecost 2020 is upon us. This year we had a real Passover. We were closed in our homes, complete with a plague, for the first time since the Israelites left Egypt. I believe Pentecost 2020 holds a distinct possibility of being more than even the original Pentecost of Acts Chapter 2. Want to know more you ask? Read on.
We have been given the opportunity to choose time with our Lord during our seclusion. This time has “coincidentally” followed the same time period as Lent, then into deep Lent, and to Passover that coincides with Easter. As we reopen our country, we are coming to Pentecost, the identifiable beginning of the original Church. The Holy Spirit burst onto the scene with wind and tongues of fire. All of this as part of Jesus’ promise, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NLT
As I read the word lately some of the phrases that really jump out to me are: “Anyone with ears to hear must listen to the Spirit and understand what he is saying to the churches.” This is repeated in Revelations after each word to the churches.
“And he [Jesus] said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” Mark 4:9 ESV
“Ears to hear and eyes to see— both are gifts from the Lord.” Proverbs 20:12
Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions. Psalm 119:18
So how do we have eyes and ears that are open to see what the Spirit is doing? The initial step is to want to see and hear. After Jesus ascended, the disciples met and prayed for days. They were hungry for instructions and the power of Acts 1:8.
When our Hearts are right before God we will have access to our Creator and the things of His Spirit. Psalm 24:3-4 tells us: “Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully.” We are not perfect. Only Christ is, and He made it so we can enter into the presence of our Creator.
Accepting His finished work on the cross and believing in the Goodness of God helps us keep our “hands clean.” Not Covid-19, “wash your hands clean,” but a right attitude and alignment with God.
Asking for ears to hear and eyes to see what the Spirit is doing is the next step. Our Creator loves to answer that kind of prayer because it is what He wants us to have. With hearts aligned, eyes, and ears open, we watch and wait with holy expectation for Pentecost 2020.
I do not know what it will look like, but since Passover this year had a plague, I am guessing we will receive power. What Kind of power? Pray and ask. Be bold and big in what you ask for. As long as it lines up with the character of our good God, He promises to give us good things. I am asking for Miracles and the love of God to flow through me beyond all I can ask or imagine, just for starters. What is God putting on your heart?
