Light and truth are both really important in life. The definition of physical light is generally agreed upon. We need it for growth, and survival, and that is a hard science. These days, defining truth seems to be far more up for grabs. Completely sorting that out today is unlikely, however, we do have choices.
We have the option to sit in our spaces and sling claims, remarks and -isms at others who define truth differently from us. Or we can come to the end of our personal resources to ask for supernatural guidance.
Since we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, how do I love people I do not agree with? How do I find common ground in strained relationships, work situations or in a polarized society?
I do not pretend to have a once and for all answer to those questions.
I have, however, experienced wise, even supernaturally wise, interventions and revelations at times. These experiences came after I personally ran out of my own answers or options.
Finally, I asked Creator what the real issues were in certain situations or relationships. The still small voice of the Holy Spirit, combined with the Word of God, led me into clearer understanding.
With a sharper view of circumstances and individuals I asked another question. How do I move forward in love? Asking opened the door, then I needed to listen. So, let me ‘kick it up a notch’ if you will. Creator has a different set of guidelines for life than our default human nature does.
“Dear friends, I am not writing a new commandment for you; rather it is an old one you have had from the very beginning. This old commandment—to love one another—is the same message you heard before. Yet it is also new. Jesus lived the truth of this commandment, and you also are living it. For the darkness is disappearing, and the true light is already shining.” 1 John 2:7-8
“Me, myself and I” do not have the resources in “us” to love the way God does.
The good news is, our Creator has an invitation for us. ““My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.”” Isaiah 55:8-9
This is were the asking and listening becomes important.
It is wisdom to ask Creator His thoughts and ways. Once we do that, we get to listen, waiting for remembered passages of the Bible, new discoveries as we read the word, and wise counsel that aligns with the Word of God.
The light and the truth come together to illuminate our path. That is when we choose. Will we follow the light and truth of revealed love?
Often times choosing truth in love is a challenge because His ways are not our ways. We cannot change another, so we need to change or reposition ourselves. Change can be difficult, but Creator does not leave us powerless.
God told Moses in Deuteronomy 31:6 “…So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.” And Jesus said He is with us always. Matthew 28:20
The Psalmist prayed, “Send out your light and your truth; let them guide me. Let them lead me to your holy mountain, to the place where you live.” Psalm 43:3
