Temple Worship

Saint Peter's Cathedral, London
Saint Peter’s Cathedral, London: A man-made temple.

Temple is not a word we use very often these days. It is a place devoted to worship. We are created to worship our Creator. It is in our DNA to worship. We gather together in buildings or even outside to worship corporately.

We do not need the HUGE buildings, but there are times they can be a beautiful way to attempt to show our love for the One who made us. We owe our  Creator everything.

The Word of God is clear about coming together to worship as an important part of life: “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Hebrews 10:24-25

“One thing have I asked of the Lord,  that will I seek after:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.” Psalm 27:4

Beyond amazing architectural wonders like Saint Peters, the Bible also tells us our physical bodies are temples:

“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,” 1 Corinthians 6:19

We are made to worship our Creator continuously in our own skin. Again, it is in our DNA. What might it look like? Taking care of our physical bodies is one important way. I also contend it includes looking around us to see the wonders of around us.

Endless vistas and display of light
Endless vistas and display of light

The wonders may be endless vistas with displays of light. Or we can wonder at the details that keep life going.

A bee propogating life
A bee propagating life

May we always keep our worship with us! Whether we are in a cathedral or store front church, under a tree or the open sky, let’s join the cry of King David:

“that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord
and to inquire in his temple.”

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
