Shifting Sands And Solid Rocks

Shifting Sands
Shifting Sand…isn’t it beautiful?

Our culture is like shifting sands. I can’t keep up with the changes in what is often considered ‘important’ to our broader, U.S. and global cultures. Honestly, if I was not called  by our Creator to be a Change agent I don’t think I’d even try or care. It is that overwhelming to me from a human perspective. Fortunately, there is another perspective.

Solid Rock…beautiful, and immovably secure. These waves are called ‘breakers’ because they break against the rocks.

Jesus said in Matthew 7:24 “Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. 26 And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. 27 And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

I thank God daily that I do not have to ‘go with the flow’ all the time. I also Thank God that I do not have to ‘fight’ against the currents. I can choose to stay on the Rock. Our Creator holds us on the Rock! That is His promise to us.

My choice is between having my life and faith constantly shifting on a foundation of culture that behaves like sand, going with the flow of any whim of the loudest voice of the moment; and staying planted on The Rock of faith in Christ the Maker of Heaven and Earth. This Maker who, from before creation provided a firm foundation, promises to never let us go and ways to stay firm.

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. 14 Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.” (Another way of looking at the waves of culture.)

When we are tempted to confusion or to give in to the shifting sands, we are not off track. Temptation is a constant. Giving in, sliding off the Rock or being destroyed by the waves of culture is not necessary. If we are looking for it, God always provides a way to stay true.

What about culture do you find true and a blessing? What do you struggle with? Ask God to show you your way of escape, then look for it!

About the author

Andrea Van Boven (Madden): I like to think I am a radical lover of Jesus, but I live in a house and pay bills and look like I fit in with respectable society, like most people. What goes on in my head and heart are hopefully the things that betray the look of "normal" that comes at first glance. I hope those things inside of me seep out to actions as well as words of hope and encouragement. I pray that these in turn will lead others to know the loving Creator who knows us so intimately that he has a number for every hair on every head.
